Review

"The Total Skywatcher’s Manual is a fun book, but more importantly, it’s a useful book... The ASP has long offered us outreach material, but in The Total Skywatcher’s Manual, they offer us a new outreach approach as well.” (Sky & Telescope)

It is easy to tell that this book has been put together by people who are skywatchers. First of all, the book is the right size and is of very sturdy construction. This book is intended to be used, and used a lot. Of course the real measure of any book is the material it contains. I have looked at every page, and what a great assortment of tips and techniques, of how-tos and actually useful information - all accompanied by detailed drawings, photos, and illustrations. This is truly a one-size-fits-all manual on how to skywatch. The book also contains information about how to construct some useful tools for skywatching. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into the topics covered in this book. If you are a beginner, this should be your new best friend! If you are not a beginner, then you will most likely pick up a new skill of two from reading this book, or at the least, gain some new insights on old friends in the night sky. And just so you know, there are significantly more than 275 topics covered. How many? Buy the book and find out.I close this review with my deepest gratitude to those who put this book together - what a fine job you have done to help those of us at the beginning of our journey to wander around the night sky.

This book is fantastic. My 7 year old is super interested in the solar system and its stars, so when this manual arrived on our doorstep the other day, she was over the moon. We look forward to gazing at the sky together, with the help of this manual, and actually knowing what we are looking at. I have read other stargazing books/manuals before, but this one is so easy to read with great tips and tricks to get the most out of the night sky. I highly recommend this manual to anyone who wants to have a better handle on the vast beauty of our solar system.

Very cool book! Remember the first time you were taken our stargazing and got to look through a telescope? Remember how fun it was? If you are thinking about getting back into the astronomy, or thinking of buying a telescope, or if you are just curious our cosmos and all things space related or if you are presently an amateur astronomer, this is a great book for you!The book features about 300 mini-section each covering a standalone topic. Each mini-section has about a page or so of text and quite a few beautiful illustrations, photos and graphics. These sections can be read in just about any order. A few examples: Section #134 "Meet Jupiter" ( (Jupiter's year is 12 earth years long, the Red Spot is the size of two earths, and Jupiter has 50 "confirmed" moons)Topic # 145 "How to Select a Telescope" (Look for diameter not power- 4.5-6 inches is a good place to start, try before you buy and make sure it fits in your trunk) Section #64- "Learn how indigenous Australians view the Milky Way" (turns out some groups view if as a rivercontaining fish, others view it as drowned brothers.)All in all, its a beautiful book that is fun to flip through. Simple enough for a kid to read and yet with enough real information to satisfy an interested adult. Great gift that you will want to keep for yourself.

I bought this book for my very intelligent 11 year old nephew in another state who I see every three years and hadn't heard anything until another brother visited them. My brother that visited them told me since I gave it to my nephew he has read it many times and was carrying it around the house. He also took that brother outside to stargaze for 2 hours while he was visiting and I heard another relative has bought him a telescope. Definitely a hit!

I really enjoy reading this book and putting the tips to good use. I'm fortunate to live in an area which has very little light pollution and this manual enhances my skyward gazing. One caveat, at tip #37, it is disclosed that this book will be obsolete in 14,000 years as our earth wiggles (I didn't know this) and Polaris, aka the North Star, will no longer be in alignment with the earth's axis. So in a few thousand years, I'll need to get an updated version...

We just received our copy of the manual, and are looking forward to reading it with our children. The plan is to read a few pages at a time, and then discuss, check the night sky, have the kids explain what they learned. The images and layout are awesome, and a quick review of the topics and content suggests the book is comprehensive. I had heard a lot about this book. It begs to be opened and will make a great coffee table book. We hope it will spark our children's interest in astronomy, science, and learning. It will definitely begin interesting conversations and family time together.

This book is incredibly informative and holds all the power of space knowledge anyone could ever want! I bought this as a gift for my step-father who is very much into astronomy and science, and he loves it! The book has countless details about different locations of constellations in the night sky, as well as little quick facts to build your knowledge of deep space. The book arrived on time, without a scratch, in perfect condition! This book is a must have for any armchair astronomer and is even fun for kids too! My little brother reads it when he has the opportunity and he is only 10! I would recommend this book to anyone even mildly interested in the field of astronomy and deep space exploration, I promise, it won't disappoint!

I bought a copy of the book for my grandchildren, who are 7 and 9 and just beginning to appreciate that they live on top of a hill well away from city lights. They liked it so much that I bought another one for myself so I can get ready to have some star fun with them when I visit. There is a lot that you can do without a telescope, and, when you are ready, the book walks you through how to buy and use your first one. It is beautifully and sturdily constructed and covers the basics for beginners as well as new ideas for advanced amateurs. I love the idea of stepping out of your door into a "cosmic laboratory."
