About the Author
Billy O'Callaghan was born in Cork in 1974, and is the author of three short story collections: 'In Exile' and 'In Too Deep' (2008 and 2009 respectively, both published by Mercier Press), and 'The Things We Lose, The Things We Leave Behind' (2013, published by New Island Press), the title story of which was honoured with the Irish Book Award for Short Story of the Year.

Over the past decade, more than seventy of his stories have appeared in a wide variety of literary journals and magazines around the world, including: Absinthe: New European Writing, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, the Bellevue Literary Review, Bliza (Poland), Confrontation, Crannóg, the Fiddlehead (Canada), Hayden's Ferry Review, the Kenyon Review, the Kyoto Journal (Japan), the Linnet's Wings, the London Magazine, the Los Angeles Review, Narrative, Pilvax (Hungary), the Southeast Review, Southword, Verbal Magazine (Northern Ireland), Versal (Holland), and Yuan Yang: a Journal of Hong Kong and International Writing. He has also written for the Irish Examiner, the Evening Echo and the Irish Times.

A recipient of the 2013 Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Award for Short Story of the Year, and a 2010 Arts Council of Ireland Bursary Award for Literature, his stories have won and been shortlisted for numerous other honours, including the George A. Birmingham Award, the Lunch Hour Stories Prize, the Molly Keane Creative Writing Award, the Sean O'Faolain Award, the RTE Radio 1 Francis MacManus Award, the Faulkner/Wisdom Award, the Glimmer Train Prize and the Writing Spirit Award. I almost didn't get this book, but after reading what Johnny Green wrote about it, I decided to go ahead and buy it for my library. I am so glad I did and only wish I could buy a truckload of this book to pass out to everyone I know who is on the fence about trying cannabis medicine, and also to the sometimes offensive know-it-alls, like me. Thanks Steve. You have created a gem for cannabis newbies as well as cannabis veterans. Humbled, I ordered his book, read it, and loved it.There are many good books about marijuana, but most authors try to deny their own personal experiences in order to “objectively” portray an “unbiased” examination of the issue. Not, Steve DeAngelo. What makes his book such compelling reading is his unapologetic personal approach to the issue. Steve openly tells of smoking pot as a teenager with a close black friend called Eddie. Both of them got caught and busted, but because Eddie was poor and black, while Steve was middle-class and white; Eddie’s education and career prospects were ruined, not Steve’s. “I was protected by white privilege as a teenager, so my early scrapes with the law left me relatively unscathed…but most low-income minority youth arrested for cannabis are locked out of education and employment.”There are many other books that give ample factual information about marijuana and its history. This book is also filled with facts. But Steve goes beyond dispensing information; he makes a passionate plea to end the social injustice of prohibition. Whereas others make the specious argument that marijuana should be legal because it isn’t as addictive or dangerous as alcohol or tobacco; DeAngelo makes a compelling argument that cannabis should be legal because it is healthy and increases well-being.Personally, I believe it doesn’t matter if a mood-altering drug is healthy or unhealthy, addicting or non-addicting, popular or unpopular. Prohibition of drugs, whether marijuana, alcohol, or whatever, only makes those drugs more dangerous and more addicting. DeAngelo makes this case brilliantly and calls for government regulation of marijuana to both protect the environment and make certain marijuana isn’t contaminated with toxic additives. Of course, as politicians learned during alcohol Prohibition, the government can’t regulate a substance to reduce risk, if the substance is illegal. Steve DeAngelo sums this idea up succinctly: “The dangers of the illicit market are the real threat--not cannabis itself.”Whereas my expertise is in the area of addiction, his expertise is in the area or medical marijuana. Although he distinguishes between “medical use” and “adult use,” (believing the word adult is more apropos than recreational,) he makes the cogent argument it often difficult to discern one from the other. Is smoking marijuana to relieve pain, medical use? If you said yes, is smoking marijuana to relieve the emotional pain of anxiety, medical use? It shouldn’t matter. But it does matter if you live in a state where only medical marijuana is legal, but recreational marijuana is not. Advocating medical marijuana without endorsing recreational marijuana is like saying gays should have equal rights, but can't marry. The only way to guarantee that anyone who needs marijuana for medical reasons can get it is to legalize marijuana for medical and non-medical use.We are at the tipping point. Although the author boldly proclaims, “Legalization cannot and will not be stopped,” this statement will only be true, if we make it true. Sitting around smoking weed and watching Bob’s Burgers will do nothing to legalize cannabis. Buying this book, reading it, and becoming a political activist can push cannabis legalization past the tipping point. A toke is useless without a vote.

At times this book was hard to get through, but only because it was so effective in bringing me back to the mindset of being an adolescent (having also been a freedom-craving explorer and experimenter in my own youth), and because it imparted so well the atmosphere and abusive tactics at CEDU. My inner adolescent (still a person I carry with me, and value, and sometimes need to listen to) wanted to scream and choke those people, wanted to shout all the terrible things about them, wanted to run away, but I had to just keep reading the book.Without offering any spoilers, there is some redemption and a sort of emotional resting spot in the last part of the book. Stick with it!I never had a clue what these kinds of "schools" were like, though I knew a few kids who were sent away to probably very similar places when I was in high school in the 70s. I was one of the lucky ones, simply left home at 17 yrs old and managed to find my way - stumbling at times, railing at society and the system (to this day), self-harming at times, but free. I look forward to reading future installments of Zack Bonnie's story, to learn how his path unfolded.I recommend this book for combining important exposé with a really gripping tale of personal experience.Love the person your adolescent really is, parents.

Zack Bonnie does a superb job of describing the verbal and emotional abuse that my own son experienced at Rocky Mountain Academy. This school has since been forced to close its doors, but in the interim has done untold damage to scores of troubled youth whose parents shipped them off to a place that was supposed to be a safe haven but turned out to be a house of horrors. It is unlikely that any of their parents would fly into a rage if their son or daughter dirtied the bathroom mirror while flossing their teeth. Nor would they gather them in groups with their friends so they could verbally abuse each other until they reduced one another to tears. Nor would they entice young girls to fondle themselves in order to drive the boys crazy and then tell them not to touch each other or encourage the boys to vent their sexual frustrations with other boys. Yet all of these parents paid dearly for the privilege of having unqualified staff with their own troubled backgrounds do these very things and much worse. If parents did these things to their own children in their own homes, they would no doubt receive a visit from the local police. But RMA staff could get away with it because they were miles from the nearest town in a secluded location with no supervision. What a relief that one responsible parent finally took them to court and shut them down.

Zack Bonnie’s heart-wrenching memoir is one of the most powerful books I’ve read in a long time, and this is just the first book in the series. As a troubled and defiant 14-year old, his parents chose to ship him off to a boot camp of sorts – a ‘school’ for behavior modification, which was actually a cult-like community with devastating psychological mind control to break the spirit of the kids.There were parts that were difficult to read, that I had to scan, and several f-bombs, but the accurate story couldn’t be told without those things. What was most heartening to me is that the author survived the horror – and that he wrote about it both as catharsis for himself, and to help others. And from reading his bio, that he found his true self despite the pain.I am waiting for the next book, eager to see the ending unfold. Thank God this RMA place is out of business! I am hopeful that the message of this book exposes any other such ‘schools’ that still exist.

Dead, Insane, or in Jail is a riveting and disturbing book that illustrates how terribly wrong things can go when adolescents, no matter how "troubled" or difficult to deal with, are seen as individual problems to be solved, rather than part of a larger community and system that needs help functioning collectively. Zack's description of his experiences at CEDU and SUWS are upsetting, though not entirely surprising, having had a few friends in high school who were sent to similar programs. I did learn in far more detail the myriad ways in which kids are broken down and emotionally brutalized in the name of "therapy" (and I say this as someone who firmly believes in the power of good therapy). The idea that these programs are staffed by people with little to no training as therapists or educators, who are then given free reign to work with children at the most vulnerable stage of their development is truly upsetting. Even more so is the description of how completely cut off from their families these kids were, with no notion that the entire family system needs to work on their collective problems - leaving these kids to believe that their emotional turmoil and troubled behavior is entirely their own fault and responsibility.I applaud Zack for his ability to tell his story with openness and honesty and his willingness to relive and recount these traumatic experiences for the sake of educating others about this dangerous industry. I look forward to the next installment in the series.
